Day 6 – Blue Lagoon > Reyjavik > Harpa Concert Hall and Conference > Keflavik > Skessuhellir (giantess cave) > Bergas Guesthouse
Day 6 was planned in accordance with our direction to head back Keflavik for our departure on the last day. Right after checked out from Silica Hotel, we started heading north back to the capital, Reyjavik. First place that we stopped for the day is the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre. You will not miss this if you are somewhere nearby the Sun Voyager (Viking ship steel sculpture beside the sea). It is a striking building with its unique architecture just like a glass made honeycomb. The structure consists of a steel framework clad with geometric shaped glass panels of different colors. So if you are inside the building, you will enjoy the color vibrant reflected from the sun outside, brilliant design.
As we were just visiting the common area, so the entrance is absolutely free. Visitors could walk around at the public area outside the conference and meeting hall, and there is also one café located at the upper floor where you can sip the freshly brew coffee while admiring this architectural masterpiece. Harpa was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. And the design of the building did get public recognition in 2013, where European Union’s Mies van der Rohe award being given for its contemporary architecture. Architecture lover and Instagrammer, this place is a must go!
After some walks, we went to a local shop nearby to fulfill our cravings for oriental food and we knew we came to the right shop, Noodle Station. This shop is given high ratings and good reviews by the customers so we thought of giving it a try. We ordered the normal Thai style noodle soup (commonly known as boat noodle here, but of course this is a bigger bowl version to cater for the Europe portion) with a lot of chili flakes! Good thing is that we could add as many chili flakes as we want, all the extra flavoring bottles placed on the table for self-service.
Last stop of the day, we went to one attraction nearby the Bergas Guest house which is the Skessuhellir (Giantess Cave). It is a replication from the famous children’s story book named “Sigga and the Giantess”. It is a story that describes her migration from the mountain into this cave located in Keflavik. As this attraction is not a popular one, it was quite creepy and mysterious when we stepped in the cave. We quickly snap a few photos and leave the cave to have more photos outside the cave. The shore next to the cave is very nice and worth to linger a little longer.
After that, we proceed to Bergas just less than 500 meters away for our last night stay. It had come to an end for our Iceland road trip, truly a memorable one with so many first encounter of the mother creation in this land mix of fire and ice. We will be back again for the North Iceland road route 1.
