Ali, Muthu & Ah Hock Kopitiam, Jalan Balai Polis

Looking for a place that aggregates most of the Malaysian signature local food? There is a reason this place called “Ali, Muthu and Ah Hock” as these 3 names represent the diverse cultures we have in Malaysia. The menu ranging from local must try “nasi lemak” (fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf) to other “goreng-goreng” (work fried) stuff will surely entice your taste buds. For local, if you are looking for new place to hang out with decent local food, you may try this place out. However this is not an ideal place for sipping coffee while working or reading (if you are thinking of that). It will be crowded with people most of the time, especially weekends.

We went there on one of the weekends, slightly late in the afternoon for our late lunch. The shop is located at among the other famous restaurant or café in KL city i.e. Ho Kow Hainam Kopitiam, Merchant’s Lane Café, Aku Café and Gallery, etc. In other words, it is a hotspot for tourists and you may need to be patience waiting for the food, as the business is always good. Good thing is that it can be conveniently reach through public transport, nearest LRT would be “Pasar Seni” station.

It is an old shop being refurbished to a café setting, however purposely remains some of the authentic old style interior design inside the shop. It reminds me of my primary school canteen settings with its table, wooden stools, antique bake lite switches, wooden door for the washroom, and more.

Is there anything meatless friendly food in their menu? Actually there are quite a number including the Mee Rebus, Roti and Telur, Chee Cheong Fun, Roti Jala (request the curry without chicken for dipping), and many more at the “goreng goreng” section with special request. We feel the Mee Rebus (noodle in potato mashed gravy) taste quite nice, and a plus point if pair with a cup of local “kopi” (coffee).

For those looking for Roti and Telur (toast bread and half boiled egg), they are only available before 12noon and after 2.30pm in the afternoon. So you will miss the chance to try it if you come during the normal lunch hours.

Currently (2018) they have 3 branches in Kuala Lumpur, separately located at Oasis Square, Bangsar South, and Jalan Balai Polis (city center, the one we featured in this blog post).
